Where Your Case Goes

Chandler Cases Are Heard In Mesa

Maricopa County Superior Court runs several regional courthouses, and family law cases are split between them. Chandler sits in the Southeast Regional Judicial District, so a Chandler divorce, custody or support case is heard at the Southeast court in Mesa. Nothing about a dissolution is decided in Chandler itself.

The rule behind that is worth understanding, because it is not what most people assume and the court does not explain it anywhere on its public pages.

The Rule, In Plain Terms

Under the administrative order governing case assignment, for family law cases filed on or after June 30, 2025, you may file with the Clerk of the Court at any Superior Court location in the county. Filing somewhere convenient does not move your case there.

Assignment is made by ZIP code. The court uses the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address from the initial filing, and if the petitioner has a lawyer, it uses the ZIP code in that lawyer’s address instead.

So the person who files, and who represents them, together determine which courthouse the case lives in. It is one of the few procedural details in an Arizona family case that is settled before anyone reads a word of your petition.

The Two Courts On Chicago Street

Chandler does have courts. Four justice court precincts sit at 201 E. Chicago Street and the Chandler Municipal Court is at 200 E. Chicago Street. Neither hears divorce or custody. The municipal court does accept petitions for orders of protection.

What Chandler Cases Look Like

Pay That Does Not Arrive As A Paycheck

Chandler’s two largest employment sectors are semiconductors and financial services. The City of Chandler publishes its largest private employers, and the list is unusual for the Valley: Intel at around 10,000 jobs, Wells Fargo at 5,500, Bank of America at 3,600, then Northrop Grumman, Microchip Technology and NXP Semiconductors at roughly 1,700 each, and PayPal at 1,500.

That matters in a divorce for a specific reason. In both of those sectors a meaningful part of what someone earns does not show up as salary. It arrives as restricted stock, options, bonuses tied to a vesting schedule, or deferred compensation that pays out years later.

Those assets raise questions a wage-earner divorce never has to answer. What portion of a grant made during the marriage but vesting after service of the petition is community property. How to value something that cannot be sold yet. What happens if one spouse keeps the stock and the other takes cash for it, and the price then moves. Whether unvested equity counts as income for support, as an asset to divide, or as both in different years.

None of that is exotic in Chandler. It is close to routine, and it is the single biggest difference between a Chandler case and a case from most other cities in the Valley.

City Median household income Median home value Adults with a bachelor’s degree
Chandler $108,095 $507,800 47.7%
Mesa $82,752 $408,000 32.5%
Phoenix $81,332 $420,700 33.6%
Glendale $73,530 $387,500 24.3%

Figures from U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2020 to 2024 estimates in 2024 dollars. Employer counts are the City of Chandler’s published figures. Higher household income and home values do not make a case harder, but they do change what is on the table and how long it takes to value it.

A Question Worth Asking Early

Chandler Addresses On Tribal Land

Chandler is entirely within Maricopa County. It borders the Gila River Indian Community to the west and south, and the two do not overlap. But some land belonging to the Community carries a Chandler mailing address, including addresses in the 85226 ZIP code.

The Gila River Indian Community operates its own court system with its own judges and its own family court forms, including petitions for dissolution of marriage, paternity and guardianship.

So a Chandler address does not by itself settle which court hears a case. If you or the other parent is an enrolled member of the Community, or either of you lives on Community land, then which parts of your case belong in tribal court and which belong in Maricopa County Superior Court is a threshold question, and it is much cheaper to ask it before anything is filed than after.

We are not going to tell you the answer on a web page. It turns on membership, on where each person lives, and on federal law, and it deserves a real conversation rather than a paragraph.

Filing, Forms & Where To Get Help

Not everyone needs a lawyer for everything, and it is worth knowing what the county already gives you for free.

Where To File

The Clerk accepts family filings at four locations: 201 W. Jefferson Street in Phoenix, 222 E. Javelina Avenue in Mesa, 14264 W. Tierra Buena Lane in Surprise, and 18380 N. 40th Street in Phoenix. Mesa is the closest to Chandler.

The Law Library Resource Center

The Southeast branch shares the Mesa courthouse building at 222 E. Javelina Avenue, 602-506-7353. Court forms by department, appointments to have your forms reviewed, workshops and printing.

What It Cannot Do

In the center’s own words, it provides legal information and resources but cannot provide legal advice. Staff will check that a form is filled in. They will not tell you whether filing it is a good idea.

Orders Of Protection

Chandler Municipal Court at 200 E. Chicago Street, 480-782-4700, accepts petitions for orders of protection and points petitioners to AZPOINT, the state’s online petition tool, which can be completed before you arrive.

Common Questions

Chandler Family Law FAQs

Do I have to go to Mesa for my divorce?+

For a Chandler case, almost certainly yes. Chandler ZIP codes are assigned to the Southeast Regional Judicial District, and that courthouse is at 222 E. Javelina Avenue in Mesa. There is no Superior Court family courthouse in Chandler.

Can I file in Chandler to keep it local?+

You can hand your paperwork to the Clerk at any Superior Court location in Maricopa County, but there is no Clerk’s filing counter in Chandler, and filing somewhere does not mean your case is heard there.

Assignment follows the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address, or the lawyer’s address if the petitioner is represented.

My spouse works at Intel. Is the stock split in half?+

Not automatically, and this is where these cases get real work done. Arizona divides community property equitably. The first question is what portion of a grant is community at all, which usually turns on when it was granted and what period of work it was meant to pay for.

Unvested grants, vesting dates that fall after your petition is served, and stock that cannot be sold yet all need handling, and they are worth getting right rather than splitting down the middle.

Is any part of Chandler in Pinal County?+

No. The City of Chandler’s incorporated area is entirely within Maricopa County, though the city does border unincorporated Pinal County to the south.

Do I need a lawyer, or can I use the court’s forms?+

The Law Library Resource Center in Mesa gives you the forms and will review them with you at no charge, and for a short marriage with no children and nothing to divide, that is often enough.

It becomes worth talking to someone when there are children, a house, a business, retirement accounts or equity compensation, because those are the parts that are difficult to undo later.

How fast can this be over?+

Arizona requires a waiting period after service before a decree can be entered, so no divorce is immediate. Beyond that it depends far more on whether the two of you agree than on anything the court controls. An uncontested case with a full agreement moves quickly. A contested one with property to value does not.
