There are two Maricopas. The city is in Pinal County. Filing in the wrong county costs you time you do not need to lose.
Two Maricopas, One Common Mistake
Arizona has a Maricopa County, which contains Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler and most of the metro area. Arizona also has a City of Maricopa, about 35 minutes south of Chandler on the far side of the Gila River Indian Community.
They share a name and nothing else. The city is in Pinal County. If you live in Maricopa and you file your case in Maricopa County, you have filed in a county that has no business hearing it.
What This Actually Changes
A different courthouse, a different set of judges, and a different set of local practices. Pinal County Superior Court has its own presiding family court judge and its own way of moving cases along.
It also changes the drive. Florence is a real distance from Maricopa, and that matters when you are scheduling hearings around a job.
What it does not change is Arizona law. The same statutes on property, parenting time and support apply in Pinal County as in Maricopa County.

If you live in Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Glendale or another metro city, your case is in Maricopa County and this is not your page.

Where You File, Where You Appear
Filing and appearing are two different things, and in Pinal County they can happen in two different towns.
The Clerk of the Superior Court runs a satellite office inside the City of Maricopa. You can file a new case and pick up a marriage license there without driving to Florence. Hearings are a separate question, and the main courthouse is in Florence.

Emergencies Go To Florence
The Clerk’s office is clear on this. Emergency filings must be filed at the main office in Florence, not at a satellite.
If you are seeking an emergency order about a child or your safety, plan on Florence. The Clerk also keeps satellite offices in Casa Grande and Apache Junction. The San Tan Valley office is closed until further notice.

A Commuter Town Makes Its Own Custody Problems
Twenty-seven percent of Maricopa is under eighteen, which is high even for a young Arizona suburb. The average commute to work is over 36 minutes, and for many households it is a good deal longer than that, because the jobs are north in the metro and the housing is here.
Put those two facts together and you get the parenting time problem this city actually has.
Exchanges On A Commute
A weekday exchange that assumes both parents are ten minutes away does not survive a parent who is on the 347 at 6am. Schedules written without naming the drive tend to fall apart within a year.
One Parent Moves North
When a marriage ends, the parent who works in the metro often wants to move closer to work. That is a relocation question, and Arizona has specific notice requirements when a move affects parenting time.
Which School District
School placement drives the schedule more than most parents expect. Where the child is enrolled quietly decides who does mornings, and that decision is worth making on purpose.
Hearings Are In Florence
Court dates mean time off work for both parents. Judges do not adjust for the drive, so build it into what you agree to and what you ask for.
The Residency Question Comes Up A Lot Here
Maricopa grew from about 58,000 people at the 2020 census to roughly 78,000 by 2025. A city growing that fast is full of people who have not been in Arizona very long, and that raises a question most residents of older cities never have to ask.
There are two separate clocks, and people mix them up constantly.
Ninety Days To Divorce
Arizona will not enter a decree of dissolution unless one spouse has been domiciled in the state for ninety days before the petition is filed. That is A.R.S. section 25-312.
Read it carefully: ninety days in Arizona, not ninety days in Pinal County. Moving from Chandler to Maricopa does not restart anything. It changes which county your case belongs in, not whether you can file.
Six Months For The Children
Decisions about legal decision-making and parenting time run on a different clock. Arizona is generally the home state for a custody case when the child has lived here with a parent for at least six consecutive months before the case starts.
So a family that moved to Maricopa four months ago may be able to divorce in Arizona while the custody piece still belongs to the state they left. That is a real trap and it is worth asking about early.
Maricopa Family Law FAQs
I live in Maricopa. Do I file in Maricopa County?+
No. The City of Maricopa is in Pinal County, so your case belongs in Pinal County Superior Court. This catches people constantly, including people who have lived here for years.
Do I have to drive to Florence to file?+
Not to file. The Clerk of the Superior Court has a satellite office on North Wilson Avenue in Maricopa that accepts new cases three days a week.
Emergency filings are the exception. Those have to go to the main office in Florence.
Where will my hearings be?+
Plan on the Superior Courthouse in Florence. Some matters may be handled remotely, and that has become more common, but you should not assume it. Ask early so you can plan work around it.
We just moved here from another state. Can we divorce in Arizona?+
One of you needs ninety days of Arizona domicile before the petition is filed. That is a state requirement, not a county one.
Custody is separate and usually needs six months. If you have children and you moved recently, those two answers may not match, and that is worth sorting out before anything is filed.
I moved to Maricopa from Chandler. Does that restart my ninety days?+
No. You stayed in Arizona, so the ninety day clock is unaffected. What changed is venue. Your case now belongs in Pinal County rather than Maricopa County.
My spouse still lives in Maricopa County. Which county hears it?+
It depends on the facts, and it is one of the more common questions we get from this city. Where a case can properly be filed when the spouses live in different counties is worth a short conversation rather than a guess.
Is Pinal County slower than Maricopa County?+
They are different courts with different caseloads and different judges, and timing varies by what your case involves. We would rather tell you what we are seeing in Pinal right now than give you a number that ages badly.
Find Out Where You Stand
A short conversation will confirm which county your case belongs in, whether you meet the residency requirements, and what the drive to Florence means for your schedule. Getting the county right on day one saves weeks.
