Family Law Across Maricopa County
More than half of Arizona lives in this county, and its family court runs from four separate courthouses. Which one hears your case is decided by your ZIP code before anyone reads your petition.

One county, four family courthouses, and a ZIP code that decides.
Four Courthouses, Not One
Maricopa County Superior Court hears family law matters at four locations, each serving a Regional Judicial District. They are not interchangeable, and you do not pick between them.
Cases may be filed with the Clerk of the Court at any Superior Court location in the county. Assignment is separate from filing: it is made by the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address on the initial filing, or, if the petitioner is represented, by the ZIP code in the lawyer’s address. That rule has applied to family law cases filed on or after June 30, 2025.
The practical consequence catches people out constantly. Filing somewhere convenient does not move your case there. And the lawyer you choose can change which courthouse you spend the next year driving to.

Cities Split Between Districts
Several places do not map neatly to one courthouse. Phoenix ZIP codes appear in all four districts. Scottsdale and Glendale are each split three ways. Peoria and Goodyear are each split two ways.
So two neighbours in the same town can be assigned to different courthouses on opposite sides of the county. If you are not certain which is yours, check before filing rather than after.
Where You Live Changes The Case
Each city page sets out which courthouse serves it, the ZIP codes assigned there, and what family law cases in that community tend to involve.

Not To Be Confused With The City Of Maricopa
Arizona also has a City of Maricopa, and it is not in this county. It sits in Pinal County, about 35 minutes south of Chandler, and cases from there are heard by Pinal County Superior Court in Florence.
If that is where you live, use our Maricopa, AZ page instead. Nothing on this page about the four county courthouses or ZIP code assignment applies to you.
What A County This Size Means
Maricopa County has a population of roughly 4.7 million across more than 9,200 square miles and 24 incorporated cities and towns. It is the fourth largest county in the United States by population, and more than half of everyone in Arizona lives inside it.
For a family law case that scale has practical effects. The court is busy, and a contested matter moves at the pace the calendar allows rather than the pace you would like. Distances are real: an exchange between parents living in Buckeye and Queen Creek is not a short drive, and a parenting schedule has to be built around the geography that exists rather than the one that would be convenient.
Four federally recognised tribal communities have land within the county: the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the Gila River Indian Community, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Tohono O’odham Nation. If you or the other parent is an enrolled member of a tribe, or either of you lives on tribal land, then which parts of a case belong in tribal court and which belong in Superior Court is a threshold question worth asking before anything is filed. Where children are involved and a parent or child is a member of a federally recognised tribe, additional federal law can apply as well.
Filing, Forms & Free Help
Where To File
The Clerk accepts family filings at all four locations: 201 W. Jefferson Street in Phoenix, 222 E. Javelina Avenue in Mesa, 14264 W. Tierra Buena Lane in Surprise and 18380 N. 40th Street in Phoenix.
The Law Library Resource Center
The county runs a branch at each of the four courthouses. Court forms by department, appointments to have yours reviewed, workshops and printing.
What It Cannot Do
In the centre’s own words, it provides legal information and resources but cannot provide legal advice. Staff will check a form is complete. They will not tell you whether filing it is wise.
Orders Of Protection
Handled differently from ordinary family filings, and available through municipal and justice courts as well as Superior Court. If safety is the immediate issue, that is the faster route.
Maricopa County Family Law FAQs
Can I choose which courthouse hears my case?+
Not directly. Assignment follows the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address, or the lawyer’s address if the petitioner is represented.
Choosing where to instruct a lawyer is the only real influence most people have, and it is worth raising before you sign anything.
Does it matter where I file?+
For convenience on the day, yes. For where your case lives afterwards, no. You may file at any Superior Court location in the county, and the case is still assigned by ZIP code.
What if my ZIP code is not on any district list?+
Cases from ZIP codes not identified in the county’s schedule are assigned to the Downtown district. If you are unsure, confirm before filing rather than after.
How long does a divorce take in Arizona?+
There is a required waiting period after service before a decree can be entered, so nothing is immediate. After that, it depends far more on whether the two of you agree than on anything the court controls.
Do both people have to live in Arizona?+
No, but Arizona has residency requirements that have to be met before a case can be filed here, and there are separate rules about which state decides matters concerning children. If one of you has recently moved, raise it early.
Do I need a lawyer?+
Not for every case. The county’s self-help centres are genuinely useful for straightforward matters. Once children, a house, a business or a pension are involved, the parts that are hard to undo later are worth advice up front.
Find Out Where You Stand
A short conversation will tell you which of the four courthouses your case belongs in, what is likely to be treated as community property, and what to do first. It is usually worth more than another evening of reading.
