Family Law Attorneys For Mesa
Mesa is the one city in the East Valley where the family courthouse is actually in town. It also serves Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Ahwatukee and Queen Creek, which is why the building on Javelina Avenue is busier than its address suggests.

The Courthouse Is In Your City
Maricopa County Superior Court splits family law cases between four regional courthouses, and Mesa residents draw the one at 222 E. Javelina Avenue, a few minutes from downtown Mesa. For once the county’s geography works in your favour.
It is worth knowing that this courthouse is not just Mesa’s. The Southeast Regional Judicial District also covers Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Queen Creek, Apache Junction, the Ahwatukee part of Phoenix and a stretch of Scottsdale. That is a large share of the East Valley funnelling into one building.
How Assignment Actually Works
For family law cases filed on or after June 30, 2025, you may file with the Clerk of the Court at any Superior Court location in the county. Where you file does not determine where your case is heard.
Assignment is by ZIP code, using the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address on the initial filing. If the petitioner is represented, the court uses the ZIP code in the lawyer’s address instead.
For a Mesa resident that usually lands the case at home. It also means a Mesa resident who hires a lawyer elsewhere in the county can find their case assigned somewhere less convenient than the courthouse down the road.

The Self-Help Centre Is In The Same Building
The county’s Law Library Resource Center runs a branch inside the Mesa courthouse, 602-506-7353. Forms, appointments to have them reviewed, and workshops. Mesa residents can do the whole self-represented route without leaving town.
A City On Public Payroll
Mesa’s employment base is unusual for a city its size, and it changes what a divorce here involves. According to the City of Mesa’s published employer figures, the four largest employers in the city are Mesa Public Schools at 7,829, Banner Health at 6,468, the City of Mesa itself at 5,250, and Boeing at 4,600 on the Apache helicopter line. Maricopa County, HonorHealth and Arizona State University follow.
Add the school district, the city and the county together and you have close to 15,000 people in Mesa working for a public employer. That is the single most important fact about a Mesa family law case.
Public employment means public pensions. Teachers, city staff and county employees are in the Arizona State Retirement System. Mesa police officers and firefighters are in the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, which works differently and is divided differently. A pension is community property to the extent it was earned during the marriage, and dividing one is a separate exercise from splitting a bank account. It usually needs its own order, drafted properly, and it is one of the easiest things to get wrong in a decree.
Boeing adds a different layer. Defence work brings security clearances, and a clearance can be affected by financial distress or by allegations aired in a court file. That is worth thinking about before anything is filed.
What Mesa Cases Are Usually Not
There is no hotel, resort, restaurant, bank or brokerage anywhere on Mesa’s own list of largest employers. The stock-option and tipped-income problems that dominate cases from Scottsdale, Tempe or Chandler are comparatively rare here. A Mesa case is far more likely to turn on a pension, a shift differential or overtime than on a vesting schedule.
| City | Median household income | Median home value | Residents 65 and over |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesa | $82,752 | $408,000 | 17.5% |
| Phoenix | $81,332 | $420,700 | 12.2% |
| Chandler | $108,095 | $507,800 | 11.0% |
| Maricopa County | $89,300 | $452,800 | 17.7% |
U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2020 to 2024 estimates in 2024 dollars. Employer counts are the City of Mesa’s published figures. Mesa is older than Phoenix but sits almost exactly on the county average, so it is not the retirement city it is sometimes described as.
The Salt River Community Border
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community sits directly north of Mesa and describes itself as adjacent to Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe and Fountain Hills.
The Community has its own government and its own courts. If you or the other parent is an enrolled member of a tribe, or either of you lives on Community land, then which parts of your case belong in tribal court and which belong in Maricopa County Superior Court is a threshold question. Where children are involved and a parent or child is a member of a federally recognised tribe, additional federal law can apply as well.
That is a question to ask before filing, not after. We are not going to resolve it on a web page, because it turns on membership, on residence and on federal law.
Mesa Family Law FAQs
Where is my hearing?+
The Southeast Justice Center, 222 E. Javelina Avenue in Mesa. Mesa ZIP codes are assigned to the Southeast Regional Judicial District, and that is the courthouse for it.
How is a teacher’s or city worker’s pension divided?+
The portion earned during the marriage is generally community property, and Arizona divides community property equitably. The part people miss is that dividing it usually takes its own separate court order, and the retirement system has to accept the wording.
A decree that says the pension is split but never produces a valid order is a problem that surfaces years later, often at retirement. Worth getting right the first time.
My spouse is a Mesa police officer or firefighter. Is that different?+
Yes. Public safety employees are in a different retirement system from teachers and general city staff, with different rules for how a former spouse’s share is calculated and paid. Do not assume advice about one system applies to the other.
My spouse has a security clearance. Does the divorce affect it?+
It can, which is a reason to think about what goes into a public court file and about how financial pressure during a case is handled. Raise it early rather than after something is already filed.
Can I file at the Mesa courthouse if I live somewhere else?+
You can file at any Superior Court location in Maricopa County, but filing in Mesa does not move your case to Mesa. Assignment follows the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address, or the lawyer’s address if the petitioner is represented.
Do I need a lawyer?+
For a short marriage with no children and nothing to divide, the Law Library Resource Center in the same building will give you the forms and review them at no charge.
Once a pension, a house or children are involved the cost of getting it wrong rises sharply, and pensions in particular are difficult to fix after the fact.
