Family Law Attorneys For Phoenix
Phoenix is the only city in Maricopa County spread across all four family courthouses. Your ZIP code decides which one hears your case, and two Phoenix addresses ten minutes apart can end up thirty miles apart in court.

All four courthouses take Phoenix cases. Only one of them takes yours.
Four Courthouses, One City
Maricopa County Superior Court divides family law cases between four regional courthouses. Phoenix is the only city whose ZIP codes appear in all four districts, which means there is no general answer to where a Phoenix case is heard. There is only an answer for your address.
Central and west Phoenix ZIP codes are generally assigned downtown. North Phoenix generally goes to the Northeast courthouse at 40th Street. South Phoenix and Ahwatukee ZIP codes go east to Mesa. One ZIP code goes to the Northwest courthouse in Surprise.
People assume the downtown courthouse is the Phoenix courthouse. For a large share of the city, it is not.

How Assignment Actually Works
For family law cases filed on or after June 30, 2025, you may file with the Clerk of the Court at any Superior Court location in the county. Filing somewhere does not move your case there.
Assignment is by ZIP code, using the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address on the initial filing. If the petitioner is represented, the court uses the ZIP code in the lawyer’s address instead.
In a city divided four ways, that second rule has real weight. Where you instruct a lawyer can determine which courthouse you spend the next year driving to.
If Your ZIP Code Is Not Listed
The lists above are not exhaustive and boundaries can change. Any Phoenix ZIP code not covered by the county’s district schedule is assigned to the Downtown district by default. If you are not certain, ask before filing rather than after.
No Two Cases Earn The Same Way
In a suburb you can often guess someone’s pay structure from where they work. Chandler means stock. Mesa means a pension. Goodyear means shift work. Phoenix has all of it and no dominant pattern, and that is the single most useful thing to understand about a family law case here.
The metropolitan economy runs on healthcare and education, professional services, hospitality, government and finance, in comparable volumes. A Phoenix case might involve a state pension, a restaurant worker’s tips, a contractor paid in cash, a hospital nurse’s shift differentials, a semiconductor engineer’s stock grants, or all of these across two households.
So the first real work in a Phoenix case is usually establishing what people actually earn. Support is calculated on income, and income is the thing most often misunderstood, understated or genuinely difficult to pin down.
Two other Phoenix patterns shape cases here. 19% of residents are foreign born and 35.9% of households speak a language other than English at home, which brings interpreters, service on a party outside the country, and international relocation questions into ordinary practice rather than the margins. And at 57.3%, owner occupancy is the lowest of the major cities, so a substantial share of Phoenix divorces have no house to divide at all.
| City | Median household income | Owner-occupied | Other language at home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix | $81,332 | 57.3% | 35.9% |
| Mesa | $82,752 | 64.4% | n/a |
| Chandler | $108,095 | 65.0% | n/a |
| Maricopa County | $89,300 | 65.2% | 26.0% |
U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2020 to 2024 estimates in 2024 dollars. Phoenix is the largest city in the county and not the wealthiest; its median household income sits below Mesa’s and well below the county figure.
The Problems That Recur
Proving Income
Cash work, tips, contract work and side income are all common. Support rests on income, so this is where a great many Phoenix cases are actually won or lost.
Language
We have Spanish-speaking staff, so your consultation and dealings with our office can be in Spanish. Court interpreters for hearings are separate and provided by the court. Ask about both at the start.
A Party Abroad
Serving someone in another country, or responding when a child has been taken there, follows different rules and moves on a different timetable. Get advice quickly.
Renting, Not Owning
No house does not mean nothing to divide. Retirement accounts, vehicles, debt and tax refunds are all in play, and they are routinely overlooked.

Phoenix Family Law FAQs
Which courthouse is mine?+
It depends entirely on your ZIP code. Phoenix ZIP codes appear in all four judicial districts, so there is no single Phoenix courthouse.
If you are represented, the court uses your lawyer’s ZIP code rather than yours, which can move the case somewhere else again.
I live in south Phoenix. Why would my case be in Mesa?+
Because several south Phoenix and Ahwatukee ZIP codes are assigned to the Southeast Regional Judicial District, whose courthouse is in Mesa. It is geographically sensible and administratively surprising.
My spouse is paid partly in cash. How is support calculated?+
Support is based on income, and a court can look beyond what is declared where the evidence supports it. Bank deposits, lifestyle, business records and tax filings all come into it.
This is slow, document-heavy work, and it is worth doing properly rather than accepting a figure you know is wrong.
My spouse lives in another country. Can I still file here?+
Often yes, if Arizona’s residency requirements are met, but serving someone abroad follows different rules and takes longer. If children have been taken out of the country, treat it as urgent and get advice immediately.
Do I need an interpreter, and who arranges it?+
We have Spanish-speaking staff, so you can deal with our office in Spanish.
For hearings the court provides interpreters. Raise it when your case is filed so arrangements are made in advance. You are entitled to understand your own proceeding.
We rent. Is a divorce simpler?+
Somewhat, in that there is no house to value or refinance. Everything else remains: retirement accounts built during the marriage, vehicles, debt, and any children. Do not assume renting means there is nothing to sort out.
Find Out Where You Stand
A short conversation will tell you which of the four courthouses your case belongs in, how your income is likely to be treated, and what to do first. In a city this varied, general advice is worth less than advice about your situation.
