Family Law Attorneys For Scottsdale
Scottsdale is split between three courthouses, and the dividing line runs roughly north to south through the city. South Scottsdale goes to Mesa. North Scottsdale goes to north Phoenix. Your ZIP code decides, not your preference.

North And South Go To Different Courts
Maricopa County Superior Court divides family law cases between four regional courthouses. Scottsdale is cut across three of them, and the split falls broadly along the length of the city.
Southern and central Scottsdale ZIP codes are assigned to the Southeast courthouse in Mesa. Northern Scottsdale ZIP codes go to the Northeast courthouse in north Phoenix. Two more go downtown. For a city that reads as a single place, that is a genuinely odd result, and it catches people out.

How Assignment Actually Works
For family law cases filed on or after June 30, 2025, you may file with the Clerk of the Court at any Superior Court location in the county. Filing somewhere does not move your case there.
Assignment is by ZIP code, using the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address on the initial filing. If the petitioner is represented, the court uses the ZIP code in the lawyer’s address instead.
In a city divided this way that rule decides whether you are driving to Mesa or to north Phoenix, and it is settled at the moment the petition is filed.
Note For Paradise Valley Addresses
ZIP code 85253, which covers much of the town of Paradise Valley as well as part of Scottsdale, is assigned to the Southeast courthouse in Mesa. If your address is 85253, your case is heard across the Valley rather than at the courthouse nearest to you.
Long Marriages & Assets Already Built
Scottsdale’s population is materially older than its neighbours. 26.4% of residents are 65 or over, the median age is around 47, and the average household holds just 2.03 people. Median home value is $789,800, the highest of any large city in the Valley.
That combination produces a particular kind of case. Long marriages rather than short ones. Grown children rather than custody disputes. Retirement accounts that are already in payout rather than still accumulating, and a marital estate that took decades to build and is now being unwound in the years when neither person has time to rebuild it.
The questions that dominate are different too. Spousal maintenance after a long marriage is a live issue in a way it rarely is after five years. Assets brought into the marriage, or inherited during it, have to be traced, and the tracing gets harder the longer the money has been mixed. A house held for twenty years may have been refinanced, improved and paid down with a blend of separate and community money.
Scottsdale is also a genuine business and self-employment town. Where income comes from a practice, a partnership or a closely held company rather than a paycheque, working out what someone actually earns is itself the dispute.
| City | Residents 65 and over | Median home value | Persons per household |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scottsdale | 26.4% | $789,800 | 2.03 |
| Gilbert | 11.0% | $575,100 | 2.90 |
| Tempe | 11.1% | $455,400 | 2.27 |
| Maricopa County | 17.7% | $452,800 | 2.59 |
U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2020 to 2024 estimates in 2024 dollars. Scottsdale has more than twice the share of residents over 65 as Gilbert or Tempe, and the smallest households of the four.
The Salt River Community Border
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community lies immediately east of Scottsdale. The Community’s own description places it adjacent to Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe and Fountain Hills, with the Loop 101 running along much of the shared edge.
The Community has its own government and its own courts. If you or the other parent is an enrolled member of a tribe, or either of you lives on Community land, then which parts of your case belong in tribal court and which belong in Maricopa County Superior Court is a threshold question worth asking before anything is filed. Where children are involved and a parent or child is a member of a federally recognised tribe, additional federal law can apply as well.
We are not going to answer that on a web page. It turns on membership, on residence and on federal law, and it deserves a proper conversation.

Scottsdale Family Law FAQs
Which courthouse is mine?+
It depends on where in Scottsdale you live. South and central ZIP codes go to the Southeast courthouse in Mesa. North Scottsdale ZIP codes go to the Northeast courthouse in north Phoenix. Two go downtown.
If you are represented, the court uses your lawyer’s ZIP code rather than yours.
Is spousal maintenance automatic after a long marriage?+
No. Arizona has no formula that makes it automatic. A long marriage matters, but so does what each person can realistically earn, what the standard of living was, and what property each of them leaves with. It is argued, not calculated.
I owned the house before we married. Is it still mine?+
Not necessarily, and this is where long marriages get complicated. Property owned before marriage generally starts as separate, but community money spent on the mortgage, on improvements, or a refinance in both names can give the community a claim on part of the value.
Sorting that out is called tracing, and the older the marriage the more documents it takes.
My spouse owns their own business. How is income worked out?+
Carefully, and usually with help. What a business owner draws is not always what the business earns, and personal expenses paid through a company are a common feature of these cases. Expect the income question and the valuation question to be argued separately.
Our children are grown. Does that simplify things?+
It removes custody and child support, which are the most emotionally charged parts. What is left is property and maintenance, and in a long marriage those can be more complex, not less, because there is more history to unpick.
Can I keep the divorce private?+
Court files are generally public records in Arizona. There are limited tools for protecting sensitive financial information, and settling rather than litigating keeps far more out of the file. If privacy matters to you, say so at the start, because it affects strategy.
