Family Law Attorneys For Peoria
Peoria is long and narrow, and it is split between two courthouses roughly along its length. Old Town Peoria and the north Peoria growth corridor do not go to the same building.

Peoria Is Split Between Two Courts
Maricopa County Superior Court divides family law cases between four regional courthouses, and Peoria falls across two of them. The city stretches a long way north to south, and the courthouse split follows that shape.
ZIP code 85345, covering the older southern part of the city around Old Town, is assigned to the Northeast Regional Center in north Phoenix. The northern ZIP codes are assigned to the Northwest Regional Center in Surprise. Those two courthouses are on opposite sides of the Valley, and residents of one city end up in either.

How Assignment Actually Works
For family law cases filed on or after June 30, 2025, you may file with the Clerk of the Court at any Superior Court location in the county. Filing somewhere does not move your case there.
Assignment is by ZIP code, using the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address on the initial filing. If the petitioner is represented, the court uses the ZIP code in the lawyer’s address instead.
In Peoria that rule can send two neighbours in different directions, and it can send a represented petitioner somewhere neither party expected. Check before you assume.
Self-Help At Either Courthouse
The county’s Law Library Resource Center has branches at both the Northeast and Northwest courthouses. Forms, appointments to have them reviewed, and workshops, at no charge. Confirm which courthouse is yours before making the trip.
Equity In The House, And Not Much Drama
Peoria is a settled, high-ownership suburb, and its family law cases reflect that. 76.0% of homes are owner-occupied and the median home value is $463,600, with a median household income of $95,815. Households are smaller than the West Valley average at 2.64 people, and 19.6% of residents are 65 or over.
What that produces is a fairly consistent pattern: two people who own a house together, have retirement accounts, and have to work out how to separate a life that is mostly held in illiquid assets. There is usually equity, and the question of who keeps the house, whether it can be refinanced on one income, and what the other person gets instead is the centre of most Peoria cases.
The city’s employment is spread across healthcare, education and financial services rather than concentrated in one place, and it is a city many residents commute out of. That means the income question is usually straightforward and the property question usually is not.
One thing worth watching. Amkor Technology has announced a semiconductor campus in Peoria, a multi-billion dollar project with up to 3,000 jobs, with production expected to begin in 2028. That will change Peoria’s employment profile when it arrives. It has not arrived yet, and nothing on this page assumes it has.
| City | Owner-occupied | Median home value | Median household income |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peoria | 76.0% | $463,600 | $95,815 |
| Surprise | 79.1% | $435,100 | $96,711 |
| Glendale | 57.2% | $387,500 | $73,530 |
| Maricopa County | 65.2% | $452,800 | $89,300 |
U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2020 to 2024 estimates in 2024 dollars. Peoria’s ownership rate is well above the county average, which is why the house tends to be the main asset in dispute.
The Question Most Peoria Cases Turn On
Can One Person Refinance?
Keeping the house usually means refinancing to remove the other person from the loan. Whether that is possible on one income often decides the outcome before anything else is argued.
What Is The Equity?
Value minus what is owed, minus the real cost of selling. People routinely overestimate what a buy-out is worth by skipping that last part.
Separate Contributions
A down payment from before the marriage, or from an inheritance, may give one person a claim beyond an equal split. It has to be traced, and that takes documents.
Retirement Accounts
Often the second-largest asset and frequently under-examined. The portion built during the marriage is community property, and dividing it needs its own order.

Peoria Family Law FAQs
Which courthouse is mine?+
It depends where in Peoria you live. ZIP code 85345 in the south is assigned to the Northeast courthouse in north Phoenix. The northern ZIP codes go to the Northwest courthouse in Surprise.
If you are represented, the court uses your lawyer’s ZIP code rather than yours.
Who gets the house?+
Neither party automatically. A house bought during the marriage is generally community property and Arizona divides community property equitably, which usually means one person keeps it and compensates the other, or it is sold.
The practical constraint is refinancing. If neither of you can carry the loan alone, selling often becomes the only workable answer.
I put down a deposit from before we married. Do I get it back?+
Possibly, but it has to be traced with documents rather than asserted. The longer ago it was and the more the property has been refinanced, the harder the tracing gets.
How are retirement accounts split?+
The portion built during the marriage is generally community property. Dividing most retirement accounts requires a separate court order drafted so the plan will accept it, which is a step that is easy to leave out of a decree and expensive to fix afterwards.
Can we sort this out without going to court?+
Often yes, and in a case that is mostly about property it is usually cheaper and faster. The agreement still has to be documented properly and approved, and the property and retirement transfers still need doing correctly.
How long does a divorce take in Arizona?+
There is a required waiting period after service before a decree can be entered, so nothing is immediate. Beyond that it depends almost entirely on whether you agree. An uncontested case moves quickly; a contested one with a house and accounts to value does not.
