Family Law Attorneys For Surprise
Surprise is one of only two cities in the Valley with the family courthouse inside its own limits. It also has the heaviest concentration of veterans in the West Valley, which changes what a divorce here involves.

The Courthouse Is In Surprise
Maricopa County Superior Court divides family law cases between four regional courthouses. The Northwest Regional Center is at 14264 W. Tierra Buena Lane in Surprise, and Surprise ZIP codes are assigned to it. For West Valley residents that is the short drive; for everyone else in the district it is not.
The Northwest district also covers Sun City, Sun City West, El Mirage, Litchfield Park, Youngtown, Wickenburg, part of Peoria, part of Glendale and part of Goodyear. If you live in one of those, this is your courthouse too.
How Assignment Actually Works
For family law cases filed on or after June 30, 2025, you may file with the Clerk of the Court at any Superior Court location in the county. Filing somewhere does not move your case there.
Assignment is by ZIP code, using the ZIP code in the petitioner’s address on the initial filing. If the petitioner is represented, the court uses the ZIP code in the lawyer’s address instead.
A Surprise resident who hires a lawyer across the Valley can find their case assigned to a courthouse an hour away. It is worth asking a prospective lawyer where their office ZIP code would send your case.

Self-Help In The Same Building
The county’s Law Library Resource Center runs a branch at the Northwest courthouse. Court forms, appointments to have them reviewed, and workshops, at no charge. Surprise residents can do the self-represented route without leaving the city.
Retirement Income & Military Pensions
Surprise has 12,830 veterans in a city of about 175,000. That is more veterans than Glendale has in a city half again as large, and it is the heaviest concentration in the West Valley.
Military retired pay is divided under federal law with its own rules, and it does not behave like a civilian pension. The order has to be worded so the pay centre will act on it. Survivor benefit elections carry deadlines that have nothing to do with the divorce timetable, and a missed election can leave a former spouse with nothing after years of expecting otherwise. Veterans’ disability compensation is treated differently again, and the interaction between disability pay and retired pay has caught out a great many decrees.
The second Surprise pattern is age. 22.2% of residents are 65 or over, the highest share in the West Valley. Later-life divorces involve accounts already in payout rather than still growing, Social Security timing decisions, and a marital estate that has to support two households where it previously supported one, with limited working years left to make up any shortfall.
One Thing Worth Correcting
Surprise is often described as a retirement community. Its own numbers say otherwise: 23.1% of residents are under 18, which is slightly more than the share over 65.
Sun City West, which is what people usually have in mind, is a separate unincorporated community outside the Surprise city limits, and 85% of its residents are over 65. If you live in Sun City West you are not in Surprise, and that distinction can matter for what address goes on a filing.
| Place | Veterans | Residents 65 and over | Residents under 18 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surprise | 12,830 | 22.2% | 23.1% |
| Glendale | 11,366 | 13.2% | 24.5% |
| Peoria | 11,935 | 19.6% | 22.7% |
| Sun City West | n/a | 85.0% | 0.3% |
U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2020 to 2024 estimates. Sun City West is a separate Census designated place, not part of Surprise, and is shown here to make the contrast clear.
The Parts That Are Different
Retired Pay
Divided under federal law, with rules and limits that do not match a civilian pension. The wording of the order determines whether it works at all.
Survivor Benefits
Protects a former spouse if the servicemember or retiree dies first. The election has deadlines, and they are unforgiving.
Disability Pay
Veterans’ disability compensation is treated differently from retired pay, and the interaction between the two has undone more than one settlement.
Health Coverage
Whether a former spouse keeps military health coverage depends on the length of the marriage measured against the years of service. Check it before agreeing terms.

Surprise Family Law FAQs
Where is my hearing?+
The Northwest Regional Center, 14264 W. Tierra Buena Lane in Surprise. Surprise ZIP codes are assigned to the Northwest Regional Judicial District, and that is its courthouse.
I live in Sun City West. Is that Surprise?+
No. Sun City West is a separate unincorporated community outside the Surprise city limits. Your case is still likely to be heard at the Northwest courthouse, but do not describe yourself as a Surprise resident on a filing if you are not one.
How is military retired pay divided?+
Under federal law, with rules that differ from a civilian pension, and the order has to be drafted so the pay centre will accept and act on it.
Ask any lawyer you are considering how much military divorce work they actually do. A decree that reads correctly but cannot be implemented is worse than useless.
What about VA disability pay?+
It is treated differently from retired pay and the relationship between the two is one of the more technical areas in this field. If disability compensation is in the picture, raise it at the first meeting rather than late in negotiations.
We are both retired. What is there to argue about?+
Usually more than people expect. Accounts already in payout, the house, Social Security timing, and how a single retirement income supports two households.
Later-life divorces are often less contentious and more financially delicate, because there is little time to recover from a bad settlement.
Is spousal maintenance likely after a long marriage?+
It is a live question, though nothing is automatic in Arizona. A court weighs the length of the marriage, what each person can realistically earn, the standard of living, and what property each leaves with.
